Progress in International Reading Literary Study 2011 (IGLU 2011)

Research Question

PIRLS 2011 is a by the IEA (International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement) initiated student assessment study which with the survey of 2011 after 2001 and 2006 was carried out for the third time.

With PIRLS the reading comprehension of students at the end of fourth grade was internationally comparative examined with the objective to obtain reliable information about the knowledge and skill level of the students in the participating countries. In addition to reading literacy, the areas of reading intention, of reading comprehension as well as reading habits and attitudes towards reading were covered. Furthermore, information on the institutional and social framework conditions that influence the supply and use of scholastic learning opportunities was gathered.

Population / Sample

The sampling in PIRLS is based on a two-stage stratified cluster design. The first sampling step consists of a random sample of schools out of all schools of the national effectively reached target population; the second step includes the determination of one or more classes in the selected schools.

n= circa 4,000 students at the end of fourth grade

In 2011, PIRLS coincided for the first time with TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study). In Germany, both studies were performed with a common sample so that the same fourth grade students were assessed in reading, mathematics and science.
