National Educational Panel Study (NEPS): Starting Cohort 1 – Early Childhood (SC1)
The aim of this substudy is to generate a longitudinal cohort starting with infants in their first year of life. The families are visited in their homes. Substantial, theory-driven surveys are conducted with the children (as target persons) and their parents as well as caregivers outside the home (group managers of day-care centers or Kindergartens, childminders). These data will enable scientists to describe and analyze educational processes and trajectories as well as competence development.
The main research questions of this substudy of the NEPS include:
- How do children under 4 years of age develop early skills and abilities and in what ways are processes of development and education supported by the settings of child care and education within and outside the family?
- How do familial and extrafamilial settings interact?
- When (from what age) do families start making use of child-care settings and education outside the family and to what extent does this depend on the development of the child and/or on the family background including the learning environment of the family, parental needs, and orientations?
Panel entry fall 2012; at least one survey per year
7-month-old babies at panel start 2012/13

The aim is to establish a diverse community of data users with different backgrounds, rather than a restricted group of experienced analysts. All researchers interested in working with the data must be accommodated to ensure not only equal research opportunities but also high-quality analyses. The training courses introduce the research design of the NEPS, the structure of data sets, terms and conditions of data usage, issues of privacy and data protection, and so on.
Day 1: obligatory for first time participants (basic program)
Day 2: for interested data users (optional)
