Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), Germany - Reduced Version
PIAAC aims at capturing competencies of adults in Germany.
This data contain competency scores (plausible values) for each participant in the domains
- problem solving in technology-rich environments,
- as well as their background information.
The background questionnaire is divided in the following sections:
A: General Information, such as age and gender
B: Education, such as highest educational achievement, current education, participation in continuing education
C: Current status and work history, such as paid work and unpaid work for family business, information on job search
D: Current work, such as profession, self-employment, and income
E: Recent work, such as profession, self-employment, reason for quitting
F: Skills used at work, such as influence and physical skills
G: Skill use Literacy, Numeracy and ICT at work
H: Skill use Literacy, Numeracy and ICT in everyday life
I: About yourself, such as readiness to learn and volunteering
J: Background information, such as country of birth, citizenship, language, parents’ profession

Population / Sample
Individuals in private households between 16 and 65 years of age that resided in Germany during the time of data collection, regardless of citizenship, nationality or language.
Person sample: Two-stage stratified and clustered random sample from all persons in Germany (German and non-German) who resided in private households during the time of data collection and were between 16 and 65 years old. In the first stage municipalities were selected with a probability proportional to their size. In the second stage a systematic random sample of individuals was drawn from the selected municipalities’ registries.
n= 5,465 interviewees
Survey Procedure and Instruments
Face-to-face interview: PAPI (Paper and Pencil Interview) and CAPI (Computer Assisted Personal Interview), computer or paper based assessment of competencies in literacy, numeracy and problem solving in technology-rich environments.
